10 Quick, Easy Facts on Why and How

Your dog’s water should be swapped out for a fresh bowlful at least two to three times every day, with a full wash once a day. That one habit protects your dog’s health, keeps them drinking enough, and is especially important for big dogs and pups who spend time outside. Here are 10 quick facts every dog parent should know, straight from the team at LV Dog Hotel on West Sahara, Las Vegas’s original luxury pet boarding facility and a trusted name in Las Vegas dog boarding since 2009, where every guest’s water is changed three times a day, and sooner whenever we spot slobber.
Fact 1: Water Goes Stale Faster Than You Think
A bowl of water can look clear and still be far from fresh. Within hours it collects dust, shed hair, crumbs and saliva. By the end of the day, that “full” bowl is not the clean drink your dog needs. Plan on fresh water morning, midday and evening.
Fact 2: Topping Off Is Not the Same as Changing
Adding water to a half-empty bowl just mixes clean water into old water. The right way is simple: pour out every drop, give the bowl a quick rinse, and refill it with cool, clean water. It takes less than a minute.
Fact 3: That Slippery Feeling Has a Name
Rub your finger along the inside of a bowl that hasn’t been washed. If it feels slick, that’s biofilm, a layer of bacteria that clings to the surface and protects itself from rinsing. Water alone won’t remove it. Wash the bowl at least once a day with hot water and dish soap, scrubbing the sides, bottom and rim.
Fact 4: Bigger Dogs Need More Water, and More Changes
A good rule of thumb is about one ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. That means an 80-pound dog needs around 80 ounces, or roughly 10 cups, every day. Large dogs also tend to drool and splash more, so their bowls get messy faster. The bigger the dog, the more often the bowl deserves a fresh start.
Fact 5: Every Trip Outside Calls for a Refresh
Dogs who play or lounge outdoors come back carrying the yard with them. Dirt, sand, grass and bugs ride in on muzzles, whiskers and beards and land right in the water. Make it a habit: when your dog comes inside, the water gets changed.
Fact 6: Desert Heat Raises the Stakes
Southern Nevada summers are tough on pets. Dogs cool themselves by panting, which means they need more water when it’s hot, often a lot more. Water sitting in the sun also warms up fast and spoils sooner. Keep bowls in the shade or indoors, and refill with cool water more often during hot months.
Fact 7: The Bowl You Choose Makes a Difference
Stainless steel is the easiest bowl to keep truly clean. It doesn’t scratch easily, doesn’t hold odors and can go in the dishwasher. Plastic bowls pick up tiny scratches where bacteria can hide, and chipped ceramic can do the same. If a bowl is scratched, cracked or chipped, it’s time to replace it.
Fact 8: Puppies and Senior Dogs Need Extra Attention
Puppies are busy and growing, and they can get dehydrated quickly. Senior dogs may drink less because of stiff joints, or more because of age-related health changes. For both, keep water easy to reach and fresh all day. If you notice a big change in how much your dog drinks, call your veterinarian.
Fact 9: Know the Signs Your Dog Needs More Water
Watch for dry or sticky gums, thick saliva, sunken-looking eyes, low energy or loss of appetite. Another quick at-home check: gently lift the skin between your dog’s shoulder blades. It should snap right back. If it stays up or settles slowly, your dog may be dehydrated. Offer water and contact your veterinarian, especially in hot weather.
Fact 10: Two Water Stations Are Better Than One
One bowl in the kitchen isn’t always enough, especially in a large home or a household with more than one pet. Set out a second bowl in another room your dog uses often. More stations mean more chances to drink, and less competition between pets.
Quick Water Bowl Routine
| When | What to Do |
|---|---|
| Morning | Empty, rinse and refill with cool water |
| Midday | Empty and refill; check for debris |
| Evening | Wash with hot, soapy water, dry and refill |
| After Outdoor Time | Swap in fresh water |
| Once a Week | Run the bowl through the dishwasher and wipe down the floor or mat around it |
