Mark found LV Dog Hotel six or seven years ago, drawn by the Penthouse Suite on our website. For a family boarding multiple dogs in Las Vegas, the appeal was simple — his three large shepherds could board together in one larger suite instead of being separated. “We love how kind the staff is at the hotel,” Mark told us. Three Rescues, Three Second Chances
Every one of Mark’s shepherds started somewhere hard.
Tank is the elder statesman. Mark and his wife flew to Los Angeles to meet a white shepherd at a no-kill shelter — but while they waited on paperwork, they spotted a handsome boy sitting with a foster family who, as Mark puts it, “looked like a prince.” They asked if they could adopt him too. The answer was yes. Tank and his new sister Tango drove home to Portland with the Youngrens, meeting snow in the California mountains, automatic doors, and their first-ever elevator along the way. “Quite funny,” Mark recalls. Tank had been pulled from a Central California kill shelter by Westside German Shepherd Rescue. He adores children — though, as Mark notes, it’s “game on” if he thinks his family is threatened.
Asta, 6, joined after the family lost their beloved Tango on Memorial Day two years ago. Tank was devastated, so the Youngrens went looking for a new sister and found Asta — who had waited two years at the shelter for a family. When they introduced her to Tank, Asta snapped at him. Tank’s response, in Mark’s words, was essentially “you want to get your clock cleaned?” That settled it. Any rivalry ended right there, and this high-spirited girl had her home.
Nick, 3, is the newest — and the closest call of all. Mark was working when an email came through the neighborhood posting system: a photo of Nick and a plea to rescue him before he was euthanized at 3 p.m. that same day. Mark got the email at 1 p.m. He and his wife agreed instantly, and he raced to The Animal Foundation, where a line of people stood waiting. By 3 p.m. he still hadn’t reached the front — so he called out to someone who looked in charge: “I want this animal. Do not kill him. I will take him!” He finally met Nick around 5 p.m., a scared boy who’d spent time on the street, and brought him home at 7. It took Nick six months to believe he finally had a forever family. His name says it all — he was rescued in the nick of time. Today he’s a big, goofy, easygoing boy.
